Freelance Graphic Designer

A poet and independent publisher is seeking a graphic designer to create a compelling and emotionally resonant book cover for an upcoming poetry collection titled Glass & Gravel. This collection explores themes of trauma, survival, fragility, and transformation through dark, cyclical, and symbolic imagery. The ideal designer will collaborate on a concept that visually reflects the raw, layered tone of the writing—one that evokes brokenness, resilience, and metaphorical healing.

The current visual direction includes a split design: half glass, half sidewalk, joined by a crack resembling an open wound, potentially accented with a drop of blood. However, creative reinterpretation is welcomed, and the designer is encouraged to propose bold, conceptual ideas that align with the emotional depth of the collection. The book will be self-published in both print and ebook formats via KDP and IngramSpark.

Requirements

• Strong portfolio showcasing emotionally-driven, symbolic, or conceptual cover designs
• Experience with print and digital book formatting, specifically for KDP and IngramSpark
• Ability to integrate bold imagery with effective typography and layout for poetry collections
• Comfortable working with dark and raw themes; ability to translate abstract concepts into compelling visuals
• Understanding of current visual trends in poetry publishing (e.g., minimalist aesthetics, Rupi Kaur-inspired layouts)
• Open to feedback and creative collaboration
